    5 recruits, 6 instructors at El Paso Police Academy test positive for coronavirus

    Covid-19 has changed the way life and work operate on a daily basis. The El Paso Police Department is no different, nor immune to the challenges brought on by the coronavirus. On Thursday, officials told ABC-7 that five of their recruits in the police academy, as well as six training officers there have tested positive for Covid-19. EPPD became aware the outbreak at the academy in early July.

    Police in El Paso say they’re disturbed after two officers were given food with a disrespectful picture drawn on it. In a Facebook post Sunday night, an El Paso police officer said he and his partner ordered dinner at The Pizza Joint in downtown El Paso. But the officers said this pizza came with something extra.

    The city of El Paso has provided data on COVID-19 cases within the El Paso Police Department and El Paso Fire Department. According to the city, 128 members of EPPD have been quarantined and 100 have been tested for COVID-19. Of those tested, 14 tests came back positive. City officials said 25 of those quarantined remain out of work and 97 have returned to work.

The El Paso Police Department currently has 34 body cameras; 17 of those are issued to the Driving While Intoxicated unit and the other 17 are issued to the Crisis Intervention Team.

    Plans for new El Paso Police command center move forward

    The City of El Paso is moving forward with its plans to build the El Paso Police Department's Eastside Regional Command Center. City council is expected to discuss and vote on offering the design contract to MNK Architects, Inc. for $2,379,046.48 Tuesday morning. In total, the project will cost $38,600,000 and be paid for through the 2019 Public Safety Bonds.

    El Paso Police were involved in three crashes in 11 hours Friday night into Saturday morning. The first crash happened when a wrong-way driver got on I-10 heading east in the westbound lanes of traffic near Artcraft just before 11 p.m. Friday night. The driver hit a marked EPPD unit, causing a complete closure of all westbound lanes of traffic on I-10 at Redd Road. KTSM.

    El Paso police officer crashes during traffic stop along Loop 375

    An El Paso Police Department police officer was involved in a crash in El Paso's Lower Valley Tuesday An alert sent out by the police department indicated that the officer was trying to pull over a vehicle who was speeding along Loop 375. As he followed the vehicle, the officer's vehicle struck debris on the roadway and crashed near the Padres Exit.

    The City of El Paso reported eight new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of positive cases in El Paso to 1,348.     Texas Deputy Dies After Weeks-Long Battle With COVID-19

    Harris County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Raymond Scholwinski died Wednesday after a weeks-long battle with COVID-19, becoming one of the first known coronavirus-related fatalities among Houston-area law enforcement agencies. Scholwinski, 70, was among thousands of first responders nationwide in mid-March to be sickened by the virus. His symptoms had worsened when he was hospitalized March 29.
    FBI releases report on 2019 active shooter incidents

    The FBI has released its report on active shooter incidents in 2019. According to the bureau’s report, 28 shootings were designated as active shooter incidents, an increase of one from the previous year. In total, there were 97 fatalities and 150 wounded, not including the shooters. The report found that 30 shooters carried out the 28 incidents, up from 27 shooters in 2018.

Sgt. Peralta served with the El Paso Police Department for 21+ years, from February 1966 until his retirement on November 21, 1987.
